A memorial stained-glass window in Christ Church, The Dhoon, Glen Mona, Isle of Man.

This simple round-headed stained-glass window was installed in memory of William Lace and his wife Margaret Mary. The window is predominantly clear save for a small red rectangular pane near the foot of the light and a colourful roundel at the head. The roundel features a fish and a fish tail on a blue background within a multi-coloured border.

The dedication at the base of the window is as follows:
“In Memory of William LACE; Born 4th Aug, 1860: Died 20th April 1917.
& Margaret Mary LACE, his wife. Born 23 Mar, 1867 Died 13 Jan, 1941."

The first Census on which William is recorded is that of 1861. This records William as being 5 years of age. His parents are shown as Thomas (38) & Catherine (39). John has six siblings Margaret (14), Ellen (12), Elisabeth (12), Thomas (10), Catherine (8), and John (1. Thomas’ occupation is given as Farmer. The Lace family are recoded as living in the Parish of Jurby

By the time of the next Census in 1871 the Lace family has moved to the Parish of Maughold. Thomas is now described as a Farmer (95 Acres employing 2 boys). William’s sister Elisabeth is not recorded as being with the family at the time of this Census, but he has two new brothers, James (8) and Robert (5).

The 1881 Census records William as a fisherman aboard the boat “Commodore 185” and then in 1891 he is recorded as being at ‘Cardle Voar Bridge Cottage’ in Maughold. His mother, Catherine now aged 69 is shown as the head of the household and is a ‘Grocer’. The only other family recorded is John who is Catherine’s grandson. At this date William is a Lead Miner.

By the 1901 Census William has married Margaret and has a daughter also called Margaret. William’s occupation is still that of Lead Miner and the family are living at Ballacorteen in Maughold.

The 1911 Census does not record William but Margaret and Margaret Hilda together with William James (9) are shown as living at Riverside in Maughold. Margaret senior is recorded as ‘Married’ not ‘Widowed’ and the Census does not record her occupation, so it must be assumed that William was absent from Riverside on the night of the Census.

This Church is one of three churches in the Parish of Maughold the others being The Church of St. Pauls in Ramsey and Kirk Maughold.

It was built as a chapel-of-ease to Maughold but is now in shared Anglican and Methodist use.

The foundation stone of Christ Church was laid in June 1854 and the Church was consecrated in December 1855. The Church was built by Callow and Looney to a design by Ewan Christian of London, it cost £730. Architecturally is a reworking Christians style if Romanesque and so the windows and door openings are round headed not pointed. The interior is still largely unchanged from the original. The funds were largely provided by Mrs Saltmarshe and her daughters (Mr Saltmarshe had been the largest contributor to St. Thomas's Church Douglas.

The original 'Dhoon Church' was built around 1836 at the Dhoon Bridge which is about a mile to the south - and the name was transferred to the new church at Glen Mona (which has caused confusion ever since).
