Basque Tribute
Artists: Don and Jared Gray
This mural depicts the role the Basque people played in developing this area. The Basques came from their homeland in the Pyrenees Mountains on the boarder between Spain and France, often at the urging of a friend or relative already liiving in America. Many became sheep-herders. Much of their earnings were saved for a return trip to the home land. The Basque people were prized for their dedication to the herds and usually stayed with the sheep regardless of danger or weather.
White Pine County was the last open range district in Nevada to host itinerant Basque sheepmen. This brought many of the Basques from other parts of the west into the area. The mural herder is the likeness of Antonio Ciscar, father of the owner of the car wash. This mural recognizes their Basque heritage.
