2242 Balaton is an asteroid of the main belt, discovered on 13 October 1936 by the Hungarian astronomer Gyorgy Kulin at the Konkoly Observatory in Budapest. It is named for the largest lake in Hungary, located in the western part of the country.

Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the region's foremost tourist destinations. The Zala River provides the largest inflow of water to the lake, and the canalised Sio is the only outflow.
