This pillar stands on the summit area of Cairn-mon-earn, an eastern outpost of the Grampians, the summit is only six miles from the North Sea coast at Stonehaven, the closest the mountain range gets to the east coast as it peters out.

The hill is close to the high point of the A957 road between Stonehaven and Banchory. Also known as the Slug Road, it climbs to over 230 metres as it passes through Durris Forest, Cairn-mon-earn being only barely half a mile to the north-east. Tracks climb through the forest to the summit, which is clear of trees, the pillar sharing the area with an assortment of antenna and communications paraphernalia, the tall Durris transmitter is two miles to the south-west, also within the forest.

The pillar is in good condition and set on top of a large amount of boulders.

STEEPNESS: A combination of a high starting point and a track that takes a circular route up, eases the gradient.

TERRAIN: No difficulties on a good track.

ACCESSIBILITY: The Friends of Durris Forest car park just off the Slug Road near its summit is the closest starting point, and from here the track leads to the summit.

NAVIGATION: The track makes for easy navigation. Take a left junction only yards from the car park, and then bear left at two forks on the track higher up, from here the track is narrower and leads eventually to the top. The pillar is beyond the tallest of the antenna.

DANGER: Little, apart from the final climb amidst the boulders.

Type of Trigpoint: Triangulation Pillar

Condition: Good

Number on Flush Bracket: S5860
