The grave site is very elaborate. On the top section of the tombstone is an hourglass with an arm ringing a bell above it. To the right of the hourglass is a skull and crossbones with a shovel and an axe above it.
Just above the hourglass and skull and crossbones is an inscription. The inscription is in Latin:
Magistro Jacobo Harlaio, Signatori Regio a Codicillis forensibus, haeredes hoc monumentum posuerunt: vir fuit absq. fuco pius; & absq. fastu doctus. vivere desiit. 1617. Aug. 28. aetatis vero 44. Memento Mori.
The English translation of the inscription:
To Mr James Harlay, Keeper of His Majestie's Privy Seal, his heirs built this monument. He was a man godly without guile, and learned without pride. He died 1617, August 28, and of his age the 44 year. Remember to die.
