While I was photographing a nearby building, I was approached by a Victoria County Sheriff. He asked if I was an insurance adjuster, I replied that I was just a history buff taking pictures of hisoric buildings.
I inquired about the jail building and was told that a new building housing the Victoria Sheriffs Department and Detention Center was built in the mid-1980's. The 1940 building is still in use for administative offices on the first floor, but the second and third floors which housed inmatesare no longer in use.
"Often the older, historic jails were designed by the same architect and in the same style or design as the courthouse. This is not the case with this jail. Obviously built in the 20’s or 30’s – it’s style is modern/art deco – it bears no resemblance to the towering and fabled Romanesque courthouse designed by the great J. Riely Gordon. Fairly plain – but an impressive door and iron works at the entry."
