In 2000, Lindsborg decided to cast the traditional Dala shape in large fiberglass forms – an idea patterned after Chicago’s cows on Michigan avenue. Local people and folks with Lindsborg connections sponsor each Wild Dala. Each is unconventionally decorated by one on the towns many local artists. Each new horse is feted in a public unveiling party complete with street theater and parody songs sung by the crowd.

This Dala horse by Shirley Malm, is painted a darker blue with postcard looking pictures on the side. Hingst Ledare or Stallion Leader represents the First Bank Kansas Building working with the farming community. You will see the two story building painted on the side of the horse called The Farmers State Bank Building. The flowers painted on the horse fit with traditional Dala horses made in Sweden. The other side shows gold coins raining on a farm. Huh? I guess the bank’s point is through loans farmers were able to buy seeds, farming equipment, or expand their land to earn money way beyond the cost of the loan. Kansans actually disliked banks at first. The territorial governors considered them criminal by taking money from people and encouraging debt through loans. Lawrence Bank operated by issuing its own money but that remained the only bank until 1864. Since then banks have become important to communities and worked to create trust with their clients.
