Ulrich Zwingli was born on New Year's Day 1484, one year after Luther. He received a good classical education and became a priest in 1506. He resisted the pope. He deceived him to put on hired men and to spend the proceeds of sales of the sale of St. Peter's Church in Rome, instead of doing good work. He married a widow with three children without permission and had four with her.

He proclaimed his teachings from Zurich. Zwingli was influenced inter alia by the writings of Erasmus. Several Anabaptists found that Zwingli did not go far enough in his teachings and reforms. Catholics once again found that he was working too fast, which led to wars between different Swiss cantons. Zwingli himself died on October 11, 1531 during the Battle of Kappel. His body was chopped and broken. His widow found shelter with Ulrich's successor, Heinrich Bullinger.
