The water wheel has a diameter of approximately 5m and is a undershot water wheel. The water comes from the river Brosna.
With the generated power, the machines in the Kilbeggan Distillery are operated. If the water level is too low (about 2 times a year), an old steam engine is used to generate energy.
The Old Kilbeggan Distillery is the oldest distillery in Ireland and the world. It was founded in 1757 by the Mac Manus family. Today Kilbeggan belongs to the Cooley Distillery.
