It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
At this point the milestone is 29.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 98 miles from the port of Liverpool and very close to the centre of Skipton.
This milestone is on top of a short aqueduct that carries the canal over a small stream called Eller Beck.
