Lake Murray was created by the damming of Fourche Maline and Anadarche Creeks by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The resulting jagged shoreline provides excellent fishing and camping terrain. The lake covers 6,000 acres, and is part of the 12,500 acre park which surrounds it. Work on the park continued from 1933 to 1940, and the park was opened to the public in 1938.

The park is named after Governor William "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, who was influential is getting the federal funding for this park. The park contains a 32-room Lodge, 56 cabins, 9 RV campgrounds with 329 RV sites and 500 tent sites.

Highway 77S makes a full loop of of the perimeter of the park, from the park entrance at the northwest corner, coming off Highway 70, around the park, to the northeast corner where it re-joins Highway 70.
To reach the Lodge, enter the park from the west (Exit 24 on Interstate 35), along Scenic 77 (Lodge Road). You will pass the Lake Murray airport, the 18-hole golf course, numerous rental cabins, and come to the Lodge and meeting hall, facing the lake. The State Park offers fishing, beaches, hiking trails, camp grounds, ATV/Motorcycle areas, golfing, air port, cabins and boating, not to mention some of the most beautiful scenery available.

NOTE: The coordinates shown above are at the Lodge itself. To enter from the northwest corner at the intersection of Highways 70 and 77, the coordinates are 34 08.111 97 06.500.
