'The Casting Out', a sculpture by Martin Elphick outside Bath Abbey. A plaque on the railings describes the sculpture:
"`The Casting Out' Martin Elphick, 2016, Cement fondue
Around 1100AD a house and adjoining chapel on 'Holloway', just over the river, became one of the first 'leper houses' in England. People thought to have leprosy were outcast from their communities. They underwent a symbolic funeral on admission and were declared dead to the world and born again to God. `Casting Out' explores the attitude of the community towards a leper in their midst.
Though Leprosy is now less prevalent in most countries, people today still become outcasts in their communities for other reasons. Discrimination is a harsh reality for many.
Consider the positions and postures of the figures in relation to the leper on the ground. Where would you be standing? How do you relate to those excluded in your community? "
