EN: This picture is taken from the illustrated travelogue "Voyage pittoresque de Genève à Milan par le Simplon" by the painter Gabriel Lory (1763-1840) with the help of his son, also Gabriel Lory (1784-1846), commissioned by the publisher Jean- Frédéric d'Ostervald and appeared in 1811.
The pass road was made passable for carriages after 1805 by order of Napoleon, the client was, of course, mainly interested in military transports. The route was therefore still quite new and contained some difficult passages, whose overcomings were then regarded as masterpieces of engineering art.
The picture shows the last section before the village of Gondo, which is located just behind the big rock in the center of the image. The village is about one kilometer away, the view is facing east.
In the 1970s, the road was made winter-safe and protected against falling rocks. This means that the exact place where the painter was located is no longer accessible today. The most similar view is from a hiking trail, which runs here next to the road and then for a few hundred meters on top of the protective roof of the gallery of the highway.
DE: Dieses Bild stammt aus dem illustrierten Reisebericht "Voyage pittoresque de Genève à Milan par le Simplon", der von dem Maler Gabriel Lory (1763-1840) mit Hilfe seines Sohnes, ebenfalls Gabriel Lory (1784-1846), im Auftrag des Verlegers Jean-Frédéric d’Ostervald geschaffen wurde und 1811 erschien.
Die Passstrasse wurde erst 1805 im Auftrag von Napoleon durchgängig für Fuhrwerke passierbar gemacht, wobei der Auftraggeber natürlich vor allem an Militärtransporten interessiert war. Die Strecke war also noch ganz neu und enthielt einige schwierige Passagen, deren Überwindung damals als Meisterleistungen der Ingenieurskunst galten.
Das Bild zeigt den letzten Abschnitt vor dem Dorf Gondo, das sich gleich hinter dem grossen Felsen in der Bildmitte befindet. Das Dorf ist rund einen Kilometer entfernt, die Blickrichtung ist gegen Osten.
Die Strasse wurde in den 1970er Jahren wintersicher gemacht und gegen Steinschlag geschützt. Damit ist die genaue Stelle, an der sich der Maler befand nicht mehr zugänglich. Die ähnlichste Aussicht hat man von einem Wanderweg, der an dieser Stelle neben der Strasse und dann einige hundert Meter auf dem Schutzdach der Gallerie der Autostrasse verläuft.
