In 1959, jurors for the Dallas Love Field Monument Sculpture Competition selected one winner and one runner up from a dozen anonymous submissions. Both winning entries turned out to be by Charles Umlauf. This is a scale model for the final fountain installation, which stands 17 feet high and is surrounded by 19 oversize birds. The commission is still on view in Dallas.
