The Carnegie Library on Forbes Avenue in Oakland may not be the first in the world. But, it holds a special spot as the main library for the City of Pittsburgh, the place where Carnegie earned all that money to build all those libraries.
A grant from Carnegie in 1890 facilitated the construction of the main library and five branches around Pittsburgh.
Since the library is located right in the heart of the City's University district (University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon), it remains a thriving community resource.
