Over 50 guitars are located in the Guitar Gallery: The Quest for Volume within the Museum of Pop Culture. One of them is a 1964 Rickenbacker 360-12 Deluxe guitar. A nearby placard reads:

Twice the usual number of strings makes for an unforgettable sound

Though twelve-string guitars had been around for decades--bluesman Leadbelly played one back in the 1930s--they never got much play in rock circles until Rickenbacker thought to electrify them in 1963.

Twice the standard six strings created a ringing, jangly-sounding guitar that quickly found a place in ________ music of the mid-sixties as well as in the rise of ____ rock.
