From a competition held in 1880 for a bridge to span the Latrobe River, a design of architect and engineer John Grainger was decided as the best (£50 prize).

It opened to traffic in 1883, and at set times is still operated.

Built of cast iron with wrought iron cross beams and trusses, and manually operated, this bridge is remarkable for its exceptionally wide movable span and for transferring deadweight to the end fixed spans by way of a system of jacks. [Sign]

The cropped Historic Photo is from the History Sign on the back of the River Heritage & Wetlands Trail Map on the north side of the bridge, and is the same orientation, as from that position.
