The Selma-Montgomery march could not be accomplished in one day. Marchers needed places to stop and rest on the way. Four places offered the marchers a place to camp, and those who sheltered the marchers ran substantial risks to their lives and properties from retaliation by white supremacists.

"The protesters who left Selma on March 21, 1965, made the 54-mile trip to Montgomery in four nights and five days. The four nights were spent at prearranged campsites along the way. Land owners sympathetic to the cause allowed the protesters to spend the night.
Campsite 1
Black farmer David Hall allowed the protesters to sleep at his property on the first night of the march, March 21st. This site is still a private residence. A sign marks the spot and you can stop and take a photo.
To get there, when driving down Hwy 80 from Selma, turn right on CR 67. A sign along Hwy 80 does mark the turn. However, once on CR 67, no other signs point the way. You must take the very first left, which is still CR 67, and the farm is less than ¾ of a mile down on the right."
