Der "Kronleuchtersaal" ist ein äußerst sehenswerter Raum in der Kölner Kanalisation. Er wurde 1890 von Kaiser Wilhelm II. eingeweiht. Auf einer aufwändigen Gedenktafel an einer der Wände werden das Baujahr sowie die für den Bau verantwortlichen Personen dokumentiert. Seinen Namen hat der Raum durch einen von der Decke hängenden Kronleuchter erhalten.

Zweck des Bauwerks war es, das Wasser einer der Hauptabwasserleitungen der Kanalisation bei Starkregen in einen Überlauf in Richtung Rhein umzuleiten. Diesen Zweck erfüllt es auch heute noch, wird aber aufgrund seiner außergewöhnlichen Eleganz und Akustik auch für Führungen, Konzerte und andere Veranstaltungen genutzt. Der Raum steht unter Denkmalschutz und ist eine der unbekannteren Kölner Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Da sich der Kronleuchtersaal unterirdisch befindet, sind die Koordinaten vom oberirdischen Zugang. Ein Besuch ist nur im Rahmen einer Führung oder anderen Veranstaltung im Saal möglich. Auf der Webseite der Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln gibt es entsprechende Informationen dazu.


Nachweis des Besuchs

Ich kann eine Führung durch die Kanalisation und in den Saal jedem nur wärmstens empfehlen. Allerdings kann es schwierig sein, einen Termin zu bekommen, da sie nicht allzu häufig angeboten werden. Daher habe ich mich entschlossen, die zu beantwortende Frage so zu gestalten, dass sie von jedermann auch durch einen Besuch der oberirdischen Zugangsluke an den angegebenen Koordinaten beantwortbar ist:

The "Kronleuchtersaal" (i.e. Chandelier hall) is an extremely interesting room in the sewage system of Cologne. It was inaugurated in 1890 by Emperor Wilhelm II. The year of construction as well as the persons responsible for the construction are documented on an elaborate commemorative plaque on one of the walls. The room has been given its name by a chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

The purpose of the structure was to divert the water of one of the main sewage water drainage pipes into an overflow in the direction of the river Rhine. It still fulfills this purpose, but is also used today for guided tours, concerts and other events due to its extraordinary elegance and acoustics. The room is listed in the German monument register and is one of the more unknown Cologne sights.

Since the hall is subterranean, the coordinates are from the above-ground access. A visit is only possible during a guided tour or other event in the hall. On the website of the local sewage administration there is corresponding information about this.


Proof of visit

I can highly recommend a guided tour of the sewers and the hall to everyone. However, it can be difficult to get an appointment as they are offered rearely. Therefore, I have decided to ask for a question that can also be answered by anyone by visiting the above-ground access hatch at the given coordinates:
