Agawam has placed a series of Purple Heart Trail markers along
the southbound, west side of Main Street. Each marker honors a veteran that received the Purple Heart during their military service.
The purple and white sign contains the image the Purple Heart medal on the left side and the inscription:

Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan, and three other Marines, was killed by gunfire on Thursday July 16, 2015 during a drive-by terrorist attack on a Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga, TN.
Thomas J. Sullivan was born in Springfield, MA on March 22, 1975. He served in the United States Marine Corps attached to Mike Battery, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. He was a recipient of: four Good Conduct Medals, two Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Recruiting Ribbon, two Iraq Campaign Medals, five Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
