The Main Public Library building stands on the same plot of land as the original Carnegie Library building. This building was constructed in 1951-1953 in the Modern Movement style, designed by Winkler and Reid, architects, and was dedicated in 1954. It remained a public library until 2004, and then sat vacant for many years.

It is a 4-story cast stone building, with a full basement, constructed of cast stone. The foundation is black marble and brick and portions of the marble from the Carnegie library building have been incorporated into this building.

On the south facing facade, there is a row of 3/4 display windows along the entire side, with a recessed two-door entrance at the southwest. There are no windows on the 2nd floor. The 3rd and 4th floors have rows of double casement windows, separated by projecting stone block separations. These windows do not extend to the corners of the building. A wide concrete block section at the southeast and southwest corners extends approximately 12 feet from the corners.

The west elevation has only a few small display windows on the first level, and a row of casement windows on the 4th floor.

In recent years, the building has been completely redesigned on the interior and now contains retail space and a spa on the first floor, a parking garage on the second, and 19 loft apartments and a few office spaces on the 3rd and 4th floors. It was placed on the National Register in 2010.
