The electric clock, a Synchronome, is on the south face of No.8 Market Place overlooking The Conge. It is in the classic early C20th electric style inscribed 'Synchronome Electric Claxtons' and is still working. It is at the second storey level below the lead drip moulding over a string course.
No.8 is a shop with residential accommodation above and is the left-hand of a pair of early C19th, red brick-built, Grade II listed buildings under a slate roof, of four storeys and a two-bay range. There is an early C20th plate-glass shop front now a 'hair studio' business, Thomas Henry's, but formerly Claxtons? Next door has a transomed window associated with the Two Necked Swan Public House which was adjacent. The first floor is lit through a canted bay window, an 8/8 unhorned sash with margin glazing. The 2 upper floors have tripartite sashes, 8/8 unhorned early C19th sashes, both with segmental heads. The hipped roof has a central transverse stack. In the south return is a two-light early C20th display window with arched glazing bars matching the shop front.
One George CLAXTON, a Market Gardener and Publican was born in about 1854 in Belton, Suffolk and he died at 70, Market Place, Great Yarmouth. He was buried on 28 Mar 1924 in Belton. Was the pub George looked after the Two Necked Swan next door?
