It stands on the towpath of the Shropshire Union Canal. This part of the canal was originally called the Ellesmere Canal and linked Ellesmere Port on the River Mersey With the inland port at Chester on the River Dee.

Not far from here is the National Waterways Museum with many exhibits of old canal boats and warehouses.

As part of the museums development various sculptures were commissioned alongside the canal, including this one.
