Le soir du 13 mai 1960, une manifestation exceptionnelle inaugure le musée Fernand Léger à Biot. Plus de cinq mille invités se pressent à l’ouverture du premier musée monographique de la région. Sous le patronage de Picasso, Braque et Chagall, l’inauguration réunit des célébrités du monde littéraire et artistique, des vedettes de cinéma et des représentants politiques. Le musée Fernand Léger marque de son sceau le paysage culturel de l’époque.

En 1987, le musée fait l’objet d’un agrandissement dont l’étude et la construction sont confiées par le Ministère de la culture à l’architecte Bernard Schoebel. Une nouvelle aile de bâtiment vient doubler la surface d’exposition. Sur les façades est et ouest de la nouvelle construction, Georges Bauquier commande à Heidi Melano des mosaïques monumentales d’après les projets de Léger pour La Triennale de Milan (1951) et pour la décoration de l’université de Caracas (1954).

On the evening of May 13, 1960, an exceptional event inaugurated the Fernand Léger Museum in Biot. More than five thousand guests flocked to the opening of the first monographic museum in the region. Under the patronage of Picasso, Braque and Chagall, the inauguration brings together celebrities from the literary and artistic world, film stars and political representatives. The Fernand Léger museum marks the seal of the cultural landscape of the time.

In 1987, the museum was expanded, the study and construction of which was entrusted by the Ministry of Culture to the architect Bernard Schoebel. A new building wing doubles the exhibition area. On the eastern and western façades of the new construction, Georges Bauquier commissioned Heidi Melano to produce monumental mosaics based on Leger's projects for the Milan Triennale (1951) and the decoration of the University of Caracas (1954).
