In the center of Rouen, a fountain was built in 1487, at the site of a well
Being leaning against a house on which one could see an abbatial crosse, it was called "la Fontaine de la Crosse".
Its condition having deteriorated so badly, it was decided in 1860 to replace it with another fountain of flamboyant ogival style.
It was made the following year by sculptor Arsène Jouän. This second fountain did not resist the bombing of 26 August 1944.
The fountain we see, identical to the second, is the third of the name.

Dans le centre de Rouen, une fontaine fut construite en 1487, à l’endroit d’un puits.
Etant adossée à une maison sur laquelle on pouvait voir une crosse abbatiale, on l’appela « la Fontaine de la Crosse ».
Son état s’étant tellement dégradé, il fut décidé en 1860 de la remplacer par une autre fontaine de style ogival flamboyant.
Elle fut réalisée l’année suivante par le sculpteur Arsène Jouän. Cette deuxième fontaine ne résista pas aux bombardements du 26 août 1944.
La fontaine que nous voyons, identique à la deuxième, est donc la troisième du nom.
