The pompous memorial by the north east hedge of the churchyard to Stephen Jackson, publisher of the Ipswich Journal.

Inscriptions Stephen Jackson of Ipswich M.A. hereunder resteth, who departed the XVI of February age XLVI years, CAIUS COLL CAM, AD MDCCCLV, Iesu have mercy

Description (physical)

Three crocketed and carved gables rest on a square base set above three circular steps. They support a tall three sided column, crowned by a flowery cross. The west facing side, towards the east end of St Mary’s, is decorated with a shield with a cross and crown of thorns, framed by holly; to the north, above the inscription ‘Stephen Jackson’ a coat of arms with chicken’s heads, a chevron decorated with roses and a lion is flanked by bulbous leaves. To the east the shield sets the initials SJ besides a church window with a pair of dividers, set on oak leaves. On this side the cross is decorated with a rose climbing its full height, to the north it displays fleur-de-lys set between four lilies. Facing the east end of the church the column has vine-leaves set in a diamond lozenge. The foliage at the top includes a Green man with shoots coming out of his mouth.

Description (iconographical)

The monument is much grander than any of the family’s memorial other slabs, inside the church, and must reflect Stephen Jackson’s II (1809-1855) pride in his achievement as the third member of his family to act as publisher of the Ipswich Journal. Stephen II was educated at Bury St Edmunds grammar school and graduated from Caius College, Cambridge in 1830 with a B.A. in Mathematics and an M.A. in 1833. He was ordained as a deacon in 1830 and priest in 1833, perhaps reflected in the cross and crown of thorns, while the church window and dividers may be another indication both of his mathematical training and that he was a ‘student of art and architecture’.
