Kivas are ancient underground circular structures that were the centre of religious, education and decision-making activity in Pueblo culture. They have been excavated and preserved and are a highlight of Bandelier National Monument.
When in use, the kiva would have been covered by a roof made of wood and earth. Wooden pillars supported the roof. Entry was via a ladder that came in from the roof. These were special places where important decision and knowledge were communicated.
