The ruin of the height castle of Rosenau stands on the 323-m-high mountain Rosenau between the "Nonnenstromberg" and the "Großer Ölberg" in the nature reserve Siebengebirge.
It is not known till this day, when the castle was established. Probably it belonged to the Cologne archbishopric. In a document from the 27th of February, 1222 the castle arrangement Rosenau and its owner at that time are mentioned for the first time. After his death his widow sold the Rosenau in November of 1243 to the cloister of Heisterbach. In the contract the right on destruction of the castle was expressly assured to the new owner. The castle was destroyed in the time around the year 1250 by the cloister of Heisterbach.
In 1990/91 the rests of the castle were preserved and protected. Today the ruined castle exists of up to six-metre-high rests of a curtain wall from Trachyt which rise on the south side of an artificially invested plateau. A board informs about the history of the castle.
