In St. Johnsbury, along the Connecticut River Scenic Byway, is the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium.
The museum is on Main Street, about a block off U.S. 2. Entering U.S. 2 from the east, turn south onto Railroad Street (still Route 2) to Eastern Ave., turn right and travel on Eastern Ave. to the end, then turn right onto Main Street and drive a short distance to the museum on the right.
The museum is in a Richardsonian style building. The U-shaped building has a turret at one corner. The roof is peaked.
The museum is essentially one long room with two stories of exhibits. In the bottom were glassed in stuffed animals including a polar bear with a killed seal greeting you as you pass the cashier. There are rocks and mineral displays, art using insect shells and wings (bug art), various instruments and devices, and some cultural displays from various parts of the world. There is also a planetarium. In the back yard is a weather instrument station and a butterfly tent.
