Look for the symbol of the Bastion to learn about the history of Nanaimo. There are two copies of this marker on site. The text below was taken from the historical marker.
When Nanaimo was about ten years old, there was a flurry of church building. First the Methodists, then the Anglicans, then the Roman Catholics, and finally, in 1866, the Presbyterians built places of worship. As if to make up for being last, the Presbyterians chose this dramatic site, which commanded a view of the whole town.
In 1893, the little church was moved to the back of the lot to make way for this graceful structure. When several Christian church groups joined forces in 1925, St. Andrew's became the United Church. The little church in the back was replaced by the hall in 1927.
