The brownstone grave marker of Daniel Ashley carries a transition image that included both a winged cherub and willows. It is a very early example of willows appearing on gravestones. The carver was John Ely of West Springfield, a prolific carver in western New England. The gravestone is inscribed:

In Memory of
Mr. Daniel Ashley,
son of Lt. Benj'n., and
Mrs. Ruth Ashley.
who in consequence of
a violent casualty
expired in bitter anguish
of Body, but sweet
consolation of mind
22nd June 1803 in the
16th Year of his Age
Read this my friends
with melting eyes
and call to mind
my last advice
Truth, which I spake
with faultering tongue
my grave proclaims
