Luynes est un hameau situé à quelques kilomètres au sud d’Aix-en-Provence. La nécropole nationale, d’une superficie de 4,5 hectares, est en pleine nature, au bord de la route départementale 59 qui relie Bouc-Bel Air aux Milles, près de l’autoroute A 51 (Marseille-Aix-en-Provence).

C’est à la fin des années 1950 que fut prise la décision d’y construire, en hommage aux combattants de l’Union Française, un cimetière militaire qui regrouperait les corps des soldats français tombés dans le sud-est de la France pendant les deux conflits mondiaux.

C’est en effet dans le sud du pays que, durant la guerre de 1914-1918, furent cantonnés les soldats coloniaux retirés du front durant l’hiver, que furent soignés de nombreux blessés et malades des armées françaises des différents fronts (y compris celui d’Orient) et tout particulièrement ceux des troupes coloniales et où, malgré les soins donnés, plusieurs milliers d’entre eux décédèrent dans les hôpitaux de la région. Toutes les composantes géographiques de l’Empire se trouvent ainsi représentées dans les tombes qui, dans un premier temps, ont été creusées dans les cimetières locaux.

Ce sont ainsi 8 347 corps (dont 2 626 dans 2 ossuaires) qui ont été ré-inhumés à Luynes.

Quant aux combattants de la guerre de 1939-1945 qui y sont également inhumés, au nombre de 3 077 (dont 396 en ossuaire), ils sont tombés essentiellement au cours des opérations qui ont suivi le débarquement de Provence.

La nécropole nationale de Luynes a été aménagée de 1966 à 1969. Elle est entretenue par le pôle des sépultures de guerre et des hauts lieux de la mémoire nationale (PSGHLMN) de l'Office national des anciens combattants et victimes de guerre, opérateur de la direction de la mémoire , du patrimoine et des archives (DMPA) pour la mise en œuvre de l'entretien et la rénovation des sépultures de guerre.
