Hand pumps are manually operated pumps; they use human power and mechanical advantage to move fluids or air from one place to another. This pump construction form was partially used till the 1950s to the water supply, until modern infrastructure was created.
In Wesseling some public pumps have been preserved. Most of them exist of cast iron and dispose of a single force rod. The pump in "Rheinpark" was developed for wall assembly. It is mounted on a massive wooden board which is fastened to a pillar from brick.
This pump was restored in the mid 1980s. Since 1983 it is an architectural historical monument and listed as No. 6 in "Liste der Baudenkmäler in Wesseling".
