FR Particulièrement impressionnant sur son éperon rocheux depuis la Vallée de la Creuse, le château de Boussac a une histoire mouvementée. Construit au XIIème siècle, ruiné lors de la Guerre de Cent Ans, rebâti, fortifié puis embelli. Avant d'être mis à mal lors de la Révolution. George Sand y a séjourné à plusieurs reprises, y a situé une partie du roman champêtre Jeanne, et y a découvert les célèbres tapisseries de la Dame à la Licorne. Devenu sous-préfecture, gendarmerie, annexe du champ de foire où auraient été parqués les cochons, le château a été sauvé de la ruine en 1965 et restauré avec un gout rare par ses actuels propriétaires, qui habitent le château. La visite de ce Monument Historique de quatre étages – cheminées monumentales armoriées, tapisseries, immense cuisine avec ustensiles rares, boiseries anciennes, meubles d'époque,… - se complète souvent par une présentation de collections originales (cannes, bénitiers,…) et d'expositions de qualité (tapisseries, tableaux,…). Jean de Brosse reconstruisit au début du 15e siècle la forteresse démantelée au 13e siècle par les Anglais. Bâti sur plan rectangulaire, le château possède deux tours carrées et une tourelle d'escalier à trois pans sur sa façade Est, ainsi qu'une tour ronde à son angle sud-ouest. Lucarnes dont les pignons du 15e siècle ont des crochets, des fleurons et des compartiments flamboyants. Une porte d'escalier en arc brisé possède un tympan sculpté. La tour sud-ouest a conservé une partie des corbeaux de son ancien mâchicoulis. Les fenêtres des premier et second étages ont été remaniées au 18e siècle. A l'intérieur, l'ancienne salle des gardes conserve des cheminées dont une sculptée d'une frise.

Inside, the old guard room conserves chimneys, one of which is carved with a frieze.
