The Springfield Armory was established at the request of George Washington in 1777. A utility box near the entrance to the Armory Complex, now Springfield Technical Community College, is decorated, on the street side, with an image of George Washington superimposed over a landscape of western Massachusetts that features the Connecticut River. In addition, a silhouette the of a Minuteman and a stylized American flag appears on the street side along with the name Santos. The flag continues on the north side along with a map of Cape Cod. The flag continues on the sidewalk side along with the inscription Armory National Historic Site. The blue field of the flag is on the south side.
