Am Hauptplatz von Amstetten steht seit 1998 eine dreidimensionale Darstellung des Stadtwappens von Amstetten. Der so genannte "Passauer Wolf" ist ein gebräuchliches Wappentier, das ursprünglich das Wappen des Bischofs von Passau war. Auf einem Siegelstempel aus dem Jahre 1568 war ein Tier zu sehen, das lange Zeit als Steinbock interpretiert wurde. Im Jahre 1904 wurde in einem Gutachten eines Heraldikers festgehalten, dass auf dem Stempel eher ein Wolf als ein Steinbock zu sehen sei. Diese Deutung war plausibel, weil Amstetten früher zum Bistum von Passau gehört hat. Nach einem 16 Jahre dauernden Streit wurde beschlossen, ab sofort den Passauer Wolf im Stadtwappen von Amstetten zu verwenden.

On the main square of Amstetten, a three-dimensional depiction of the coat of arms of the city of Amstetten has been erected in 1998. The so-called "Passauer Wolf" (Wolf of Passau) is a common heraldic animal, which was originally the coat of arms of the Bishop of Passau. On a seal stamp from 1568, an animal was seen, which for a long time was interpreted as an ibex. In 1904 it was stated in an expert report by a heraldist that the animal on the stamp was more a wolf than an ibex. This interpretation was plausible because Amstetten used to belong to the bishopric of Passau. After a 16-year dispute, it was decided to use the Passauer Wolf in the coat of arms of Amstetten.
