"La construction du bâtiment démarre dans les années 60. Le terrain sur lequel est édifiée la synagogue abritait auparavant un garage, détruit par les bombardements. Le propriétaire de ce garage est un juif déporté, qui n'est jamais revenu.
Alors que l'on retrouve des traces d'une synagogue à Rouen dès le Moyen-Age, il n'en existait pas à Caen jusqu'à la construction de celle-ci, dès 1962. Pendant de nombreuses années, le culte était célébré dans différentes salles municipales et même un musée (le musée Langlois).
Financée à 75% par le Fonds unifié social juif et à 25% par une souscription, la synagogue aura coûté 20 millions d'anciens francs. Selon le Consistoire régional Normandie, la communauté abrite aujourd'hui près de 200 familles.

L'hymne de la République est entonné dans la Synagogue de Caen. Ce lieu de culte inauguré en 1966 est la propriété de la communauté juive. Le grand Rabbin de France Haïm Korsia, le plus haut représentant national de la religion Juive a tenu à être présent. Il invite son frère catholique à Monseigneur Boulanger, évêque du diocèse de Bayeux-Lisieux, à le rejoindre. Au-delà du dialogue inter-religieux, célébrer les 50 ans de la fondation de cette synagogue était aussi l'occasion de rendre hommage aux fondateurs et préparer l'avenir de la communauté."
