In Denis Diderot's short "First Satire" (which is published with his farcical novella "Rameau's Nephew", an unnamed character is having a discussion with the narrator. The unnamed character relates a story about a discussion he had with another man (identified in the notes as Claude de Rulhiere) while walking through the Tuileries. Rulhiere, in turn, relates another story about an Archbishop of Paris who complains about several things and discusses several scandals. The discussion leaves Rulhiere realizing he has learned nothing other than the character of the Archbishop.
The Tuileries are the extensive gardens that surround the Louvre, which is now a Museum, but at the time of this satire, served as the Royal Palace.
