The Tennessee stands on the ground of what was once the site of the Andersonville Civil War Prison. The small monument was erected with the assistance of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Women's Relief Corps, who raise the necessary funds for placement of the monument. The monument was dedicated on November 12, 1915. The inscription on the front of the monument reads:

IN MEMORY OF HER UNION SOLDIERS AND LOYAL SONS WHO DIED IN CONFEDERATE PRISONS DURING THE WAR OF 1861-1865.

WE WHO LIVE FOR OURSELVES FORGET BUT NOT FOR THOSE WHO DIE HERE. (1285 DIED)

The inscription on the rear of the monument reads:

THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY THE VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS OF THEIR SURVIVING COMRADES AND FRIENDS."
