The plaque is attached to a natural stone cairn that stands about 3.5 feet in height. Also on the viewing area are two information signs.

The viewing area over looks Alkali Lake which gets its name from the high concentration of soluble alkali metals, especially sodium.

The viewing area is large accommodating various vantage points for the experienced bird watcher or the casual passersby.

Alkali Lake provides habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds and migratory geese and songbirds which can be viewed from this area. Examples of some of the waterfowl that use this area for nesting and feeding are American Avocet, American Coot, Wilson's Phalarop, Northern Shoveler and American White Pelican.
