The information sign stands next to a segment of a Californian sequoia. Annual rings of the segment show the history of Bonn. The tree segment was a gift of the United States of America to the citizens of Bonn. On the 31st of May, 1989 Mrs. Barbara Bush, wife of the American president George Bush, has dedicated this segment of a 750-year-old Californian sequoia as a present of the American people to the citizens of Bonn to the 2000-annual celebration of their town.

"Der größte Baum der Welt, "Redwood" oder Mammutbaum (Sequoia sempervirens) , ist an der amerikanischen Westküste in Zentral- und Nordkalifornien sowie im Südwesten Oregons beheimatet. Ein Mammutbaum kann eine Höhe von 110 Metern, einen Durchmesser von 6 Metern und ein Alter von 2000 Jahren erreichen.
Ein solches Alter setzt eine einzigartige Widerstandfähigkeit gegen Naturkatastrophen voraus. So ist der Mammutbaum weitgehend immun gegen Schädlinge und Pilzbefall. Er ist ferner fähig, seine Baumkrone und sein Wurzelwerk selbst nach verheerenden Waldbränden und Überflutungen zu erneuern."

"The biggest tree of the world, "Redwood" or sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens), is resident on the American west coast in Central- and Northern California as well as in the southwest of Oregon. A sequoia can reach a height of 110 metres, a diameter from 6 metres and an age of 2000 years.
Such an age assumes a unique opposition ability against natural disasters. Thus the sequoia is widely immune against pests and mushroom infestation. It is further able to renew its tree top and its roots work even after disastrous forest fires and floods."
