Genau einen Monat nachdem die Firma „Paraje Natural de Ajuy“ begonnen hatte, für den Zugang zu den Höhlen von Ajuy Eintrittsgeld zu verlangen, hat das Unternehmen seine höchst umstrittene Aktivität eingestellt.
Als vermeintliche Eigentümerin des Geländes, auf dem sich die Höhlen von Ajuy und der Weg der zu deren Eingang führt, hatte die Firma am 18.06.2013 Mitarbeiter bereits am Beginn des Weges zu den Höhlen postiert, um von Besuchern ein Eintrittsgeld von 7€ für Erwachsene und 3€ für Kinder verlangen.
Die Maßnahme hatte zu heftigen Protesten unter den Anwohnern und Restaurantbetreibern in Ajuy geführt, die die Auffassung vertreten, dass es sich bei dem Zugang zu den Höhlen um einen öffentlichen Weg handelt und dass die Höhlen selbst im sogenannten „dominio público maritimo-terrestre“ liegen, einem Bereich, der öffentliches Eigentum darstellt, bzw. in dem ein privater Eigentümer den Zugang nicht verhindern kann. Außerdem befinden sich die Höhlen in einem Naturschutzgebiet, in dem jede gewerbliche Tätigkeit einer Genehmigung bedarf.
Folglich fanden sich Beamte und Mitarbeiter sämtlicher Behörden ein, in deren Zuständigkeitsbereich die möglicherweise von der Betreiberfirma begangenen Gesetzesverstöße gefallen sein könnten, darunter die Umweltbehörde der Inselverwaltung, die Küstenbehörde, die Gemeindepolizei sowie die Abteilung für Umweltdelikte der Guardia Civil, die Seprona.
Zunächst hatte am 13.07.2013 eine Aktion der Anwohner von Ajuy dazu geführt, dass die Besucher der Höhle ohne Zahlung des Eintrittspreises die „Mautstelle“ passieren konnten, indem sie mittels einer großen Menschenmenge eine Schneise bildeten und die Besucher unter Applaus an den Kassierern vorbeischleusten. Möglicherweise war es dann schließlich eine Anzeige der SEPRONA bei der Umweltstaatsanwaltschaft wegen mutmaßlicher Usurpation (=illegale Ausübung öffentlicher Funktionen), die das Unternehmen zum vollständigen Rückzug bewegt hat."
