Maximilian Joseph stammte aus einer Pfälzer Seitenlinie der Familie der Wittelsbacher und wurde in Schwetzingen bei Mannheim geboren.
Er wurde am 1. Januar 1806 in München als Maximilian I. Joseph zum ersten König Bayerns erhoben. Bei seinen Untertanen wurde er mit der populären Kurzform seines Namens „König Max“ genannt.
Das Denkmal steht im Tegernseer Kur garten mit der Inschrift:
"Max I. Joseph
König von Bayern
Sein Andenken
bleib uns heilig"

Maximilian Joseph came from a Palatine side line of the Wittelsbach family and was born in Schwetzingen near Mannheim.
He was elevated to Maximilian I Joseph, the first king of Bavaria, on 1 January 1806 in Munich. Among his subjects he was called with the popular short form of his name "King Max".
The monument is in the Tegernseer spa garden with the inscription:
