An der Nordwest Seite des Maxhauses - einem ehemaligen Kloster der Franziskaner und späteren Schule - befindet sich diese Gedenktafel für den Maschinenbau-Ingenieur und Hochschullehrer Franz Grashof.
Die Inschrift lautet:

Franz Grashof (* 11. Juli 1826 in Düsseldorf; † 26. Oktober 1893 in Karlsruhe) wurde in diesem Haus als Sohn von Elisabeth Brüggemann und Karl Grashof, Lehrer am Königlichen Gymnasium in Düsseldorf, geboren.
Er besuchte die Grund- und Realschule in Düsseldorf sowie die Gewerbeschule in Hagen. Motiviert durch den Aufschwung der Dampfschiffe und der Eisenbahn, begann er seine praktische Tätigkeit in einer Schlosserei und ging an das Königlichen Gewerbeinstitut Berlin, wo er Mathematik, Physik und Maschinenbau studierte.
1854 schloß Franz Grashof sein Studium ab und wurde Lehrer für Mathematik und Mechanik am Königlichen Gewerbeinstitut Berlin. 1855 erhielt er die die Leitung des Königlichen Eichamtes in Berlin. Im darauffolgenden Jahr war er an der Gründung des Vereins Deutscher Ingenieure beteiligt dessen Direktor er bis 1890 war. Von 1863 bis 1891 war er Professor der allgemeinen und theoretischen Maschinenlehre an der Technischen Hochschule Karlsruhe.

Franz Grashof (* 11. July 1826 in Düsseldorf; † 26. October 1893 in Karlsruhe) was born in this house as son of Elisabeth Brüggemann and Karl Grashof, teacher at the Royal upper secondary school in Düsseldorf.
He visited the elementary and lower secondary school in Düsseldorf and the industrial school in Hagen. Motivated by the rise of steamers and the railway, he started working at a locksmith’s shop and went to the royal vocational institute in Berlin, where he studied mathematics, physics and mechanical engineering.
In 1854 Franz Grashof concluded his studies and became a teacher in mathematics and mechanics at the royal vocational institute in Berlin. In 1855 he got the leadership of the royal gauging office in Berlin. In the following year he was involved in the establishment of the Association of German Engineers (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) and became its managing director until 1890. From 1863 to 1891 he was a professor of General and Theoretical Machine Science at the Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe.
