Arriving in Tonkawa in the early morning, we began walking around looking for neat things, and there it was!!! Alewa Deli. We first decided to stop in to see whether the building was perhaps a former railroad freight building. We were told No, but it still looks like that to us.
We stepped into the place, up three little steps to the door, and found ourselves accosted by friendly, rural, coffee drinkers who probably gather here every morning of the year. We had a blast visiting with them, and learning about Tonkawa.
This is a long, narrow little eating place that specializes in breakfast and deli soups and sandwiches. They have a full breakfast menu like you'd expect and we hear their sandwiches are to die for. They can also supply catered sandwiches, fruit and snacks. They are open Monday thru Friday, and till 5:00 at times.
We later learned that the correct pronunciation of Alewa is "Alley Way" because the building lies between two alleys. Whooda thunk!!
