"Vaillancourt Fountain, sometimes called Quebec libre!, is a large fountain located in Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco, designed by the Québécois artist Armand Vaillancourt in 1971. It is about 40 feet (12 m) high and is constructed out of precast concrete square tubes. Long considered controversial because of its stark, modernist appearance, there have been several unsuccessful proposals to demolish the fountain over the years. It was the site of a free concert by U2 in 1987, when lead singer Bono spray painted graffiti on the fountain and was both praised and criticized for the action." (visit link)

"The fountain sculpture is composed of 101 concrete boxes through which water flows in fourteen channels. The basic elements of the sculpture are 10 foot concrete boxes which are roughly 11 ft. in length and 5 ft. square. Thirty-seven of the elements are connected to form the rear base wall and the remaining sixty-four elements are connected to a height of approximately 30 ft. The elements are hollow allowing water to flow through them and pour out into the fountain pool. The pool is approximately 3 feet wide and 18 inches deep, and it surrounds the back of the sculpture."
