Beneath three flagpoles, one flying the flag of the United States, is a granite marker which reads: "To all Cherokee Strip pioneers and all U.S. veterans / In honor of Louise Lillard Starr and my pioneer parents / By John Curtis Starr"

The Cherokee Strip Land Run began at noon on September 16, 1893. An estimated 100,000 people raced to stake their claim to part of what had formerly been Cherokee grazing land. The town of Tonkawa was established as a result of this Land Run.
