The Chambersburg & Bedford Turnpike Company Toll House is on the northern berm of U. S. 30, approximately one mile west of the village of St. Thomas.

The dwelling is a two-story structure built in 1818 of course natural limestone. The significance of this early 19th century building lies in its role as a toll house along a very important turnpike road.

On January 15, 1818, John and Mathlena Mish, sold 1/4 acre of land along the established wagon road from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to the Chambersburg and Bedford Turnpike Company for $100.00. The turnpike company erected a house shortly after they acquired the land.

On April 6, 1920, the turnpike company sold the property to John M. Small for $60.00, thus reverting it to the farm of which it had been a part of.
