Powell Street is oriented north-south and runs through Union Square, North Beach, Nob Hill, Russian Hill and ends at Fisherman's Wharf.
Powell Street is also known for its cable car terminus which is always very busy at the crossroads with Market Street.
The Academy of Art University owns and operates several buildings on Powell street for housing and academic purposes.
The street was named for Dr. William J. Powell, surgeon of the U.S. sloop of war Warren, which was active during the conquest of California.
