This old oak tub is a washing machine. A significant step up from boiling clothes in a big black tub over the fire, this machine allowed the clothes to be agitated in the hot water and run through the wringer rather than by hand. Of course, in most situations, the water was still heated by fire. Sold in the Sears and Roebuck catalog for $5.62 in 1908, this helped relieve washer women, almost always the case, of significant physical effort. Given its condition, I suspect the wood has been refinished and the plastic appearing agitator is a bit suspicious. The name Mississippi is unmistakeable.
